No-exam life insurance

What gets approved for immediate underwriting and how it differs if a physical exam is needed.

Many insurers now provide fast-track underwriting: qualifying applicants within age and coverage limits are evaluated on application data, prior prescriptions, driving history and other databases instead of an in-person exam. Approvals frequently arrive within 24 hours. Your quote summary indicates if the product requires an exam, might need one, or doesn't require one.

What it changes

Skipping an exam doesn't eliminate underwriting. Your statements are checked, and a policy granted based on false statements is subject to cancellation in the initial two years. If the carrier's research uncovers issues, you might still need an exam; you can choose at that point.

Who tends to qualify

Generally those under approximately 60 requesting amounts within the carrier's fast-track cap, free of significant health problems and no recent tobacco consumption. Recent medical records with lab work may be substituted for a new exam at some carriers.

If required, a paramedical examiner generally visits your residence or workplace for a 20- to 40-minute appointment in your area, without cost to you. Positive test results frequently enhance your underwriting score if you're in good health, so an examination can actually help your case.
