Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded on September 1, 1772, by Father Junípero Serra and is the only L-shaped mission church in California.
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was established on September 1, 1772, as the fifth mission in Father Junípero Serra's California mission chain. Serra chose the site after a hunting expedition demonstrated the abundance of natural resources and favorable climate. The mission was strategically located to serve both the Spanish settlement and the Chumash people of the region.
The mission's architecture is distinctive: it is the only L-shaped mission church in California, with a secondary nave of nearly equal size situated to the right of the altar. Extensive building operations began in 1794, with the quadrangle completed by 1819. Mission bells from Lima, Peru, arrived in 1820 and remain part of the structure today. After California's statehood in 1850, the mission served as the county's first courthouse and jail before being restored to its original mission style in the 1930s.
The mission today stands at the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo, functioning as both a parish church and museum.
